What Is CGPA?

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It represents a student’s overall academic performance across multiple subjects or semesters.

Unlike percentage, which expresses marks out of 100, CGPA represents academic performance using grade points. Depending on the institution, these points are measured on a 4-point, 5-point or 10-point scale.

How to Convert CGPA to Percentage

Converting CGPA to percentage expresses your overall grade point average as a percentage. The calculation depends on the conversion method being used.

CGPA to Percentage Formula for a 10-Point Scale

One formula used by some institutions is:

Percentage = (CGPA × 10) − 7.5

Multiply your CGPA by 10, then subtract 7.5 from the result.

Example: Convert 8.5 CGPA to Percentage

Suppose your CGPA is 8.5 on a 10-point scale. Using the formula above:

  • Step 1: Multiply your CGPA by 10.
    8.5 × 10 = 85
  • Step 2: Subtract 7.5.
    85 − 7.5 = 77.5%

Therefore, 8.5 CGPA equals 77.5% using this formula.

CGPA to Percentage Formula for a 5-Point Scale

The calculator uses proportional conversion for a 5-point scale. Divide your CGPA by 5 and multiply by 100.

Percentage = (CGPA ÷ 5) × 100

Example: Convert 4 CGPA to Percentage

If your CGPA is 4.0 out of 5, the calculation is:

  • Step 1: Divide your CGPA by 5.
    4 ÷ 5 = 0.8
  • Step 2: Multiply by 100.
    0.8 × 100 = 80%

Therefore, 4.0 CGPA equals 80% using the proportional method.

Note: CGPA conversion formulas vary by university.

How to Convert Percentage to CGPA

To calculate CGPA from a percentage, reverse the conversion formula used to obtain that percentage.

Using the 10-Point Scale

Use this formula to convert percentage to CGPA:

CGPA = (Percentage + 7.5) ÷ 10
Example: Convert 80% to CGPA
(80 + 7.5) ÷ 10 = 8.75
An 80% percentage converts to 8.75 CGPA.

Using the 5-Point Scale

Use this formula for the 5-point scale:

CGPA = (Percentage ÷ 100) × 5
Example: Convert 80% to CGPA
(80 ÷ 100) × 5 = 4.0
An 80% percentage converts to 4.0 CGPA.
Note: CGPA conversion formulas vary by university.

CGPA vs Percentage: What Is the Difference?

CGPA represents academic performance as grade points accumulated across subjects or semesters, while percentage expresses marks as a value out of 100. The key difference is how academic results are calculated and presented.
